How I Saved Money This Week

-Last winter my neighbor asked if I wanted some turnip greens.  When someone offers you free food you should always say YES.  The boys and I grabbed some plastic bags and headed to where they were planted and picked two big sacks full. I didn’t have time to cook the greens then so I washed them and put them in the freezer.  Last night I used one of the bags to make Swamp Soup.  Soup is cheap, healthy and one pot usually make several meals.  If I can get a good picture I’ll post my recipe!

-My husband fixed our dishwasher.  It had stopped cleaning the dishes and sometime made a weird clicking noise.  He searched the web to see what could be the problem.  It ended up that the parts that grind up the stuck on food pieces was clogged up.  He was able to fix it and saved us at least $100 by figuring out the problem and fixing it himself.

About a year ago the front panel on our dishwasher went out.  The repair guy told us it would be best to replace the entire dishwasher. My husband did some research on the web and was able to fix the dishwasher himself for less than $100.  He’s done the same to our broken vacuum cleaner, instead of chunking it he figured out what was broken and replaced the piece.  We’ve saved hundreds of dollars over the years because my husband fixes things that our broken rather than just toss them and replace with something new.

What did you do to save money this week?

We live in a disposable society. It’s easier to throw things out than to fix them. We even give it a name, we call it recycling. -Neil LaBute
